It is created by Matt Shanks, critically acclaimed and internationally published author/illustrator from Melbourne, Australia. This is an all ages story but kids younger than 7 years old may need some light assistance with language.
All proceeds from the sale of This Generous Earth will support literacy education access for disadvantaged children via the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation.
We bring nothing into this world
except our gradual ability
to create it, out of all that vanishes
and all that will outlast us
– Les Murray, Continuous Creation
This Generous Earth began with a single image in watercolour – a child lost in a dark forest looking for the light.
We are all born into this world without our choosing. We are helpless. We need our parents, carers, and other humans to ensure we survive and, hopefully, thrive.
With such generosity provided to us before we are even able to understand it, we are left to believe that the world is ours to conquer. Except, in the end, it’s not. The Earth will always come for what is hers and then, no matter what sort of life we’ve lived, we are compelled to give back.
